Do you enjoy your life? Do you understand and relish the fact that God is Sovereign over all mankind? Does it cause you to marvel that He “is in heaven and does as He pleases” (Psalm 115:3)? Do you wake up excited for a new day to explore His majestic creation? Or are you bored, living in a matrix of your own creation? Are you so fed up with the beauty of God’s work that you continually escape into the traps of Neo-Pagan Hollywood? Does He leave your mind the second those opening credits begin? Well, this may very be the blog for you.
If you are wanting to understand the often detrimental effects of Hollywood’s wicked propaganda in order to further reflect on the glories of Christ and what He is saving us from. Then I am excited to inform you that I am going on a journey and would love to have you along! A journey through Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, Disney, Netflix, the Christian film industry and far more. We will be unveiling the true ideologies that often underlie the very films that we think so little of. Your thinking is being shaped, the question is to whom is it being shaped towards.
As a child and teenager growing up, movies were my favourite escape. It gave me the ability to enter into the thoughts of a fictional character for hours on end. I could go back, repeat and analyze the motivations, ideas and concepts that were underneath the characters and stories at large. Then, I began to notice the rise of movie franchises. Marvel skyrocketed into existence and Disney bought Star Wars, reviving it from the dead (before killing it all over again with The Last Jedi and resurrecting it once again with The Mandalorian).
What I did not realize until the age of 15 (the point of my salvation) was how these films were deeply rooting religious concepts and ideas into my head too. It was not all just emotional arcs and philosophical ideas within the films that I had to grapple with. But now, my personal newfound discovery that there are very real and tangible effects that art and entertainment play into our lives. We see this often politically with say, a film like 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi, directed by Michael Bay and starring John Krasinski. In 2016 the film was brought up as potentially affecting Hillary Clinton’s campaign. This was recognized as a legitimate concern because film plays a much larger role in our decisions than we often assume.
If we want to win the culture, we are going to need to win the battle of ideas within ourselves first. We do not do this alone though. It is done by the mighty power of the Word of God which is “breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness” (1 Timothy 3:16). I should make it clear that I am a reformed Baptist and that this will be a strictly Sola Scriptura blog (scripture is the sole authority in the life of the believer). As such, we will analyze films from the perspective of the filmmakers and philosophers behind them before responding with the arguments made from scripture and the application thereof. May the Lord be with you all! Soli Deo Gloria!!!
